The tongue weight is the downward force from the tongue of the trailer to the hitch. In other words, it is the amount of trailer weight loaded behind the rear axle of your vehicle.
So why does the weight of the BOAT TRAILER TONGUE matter?
Dragging a trailer with an improper tongue weight can cause the trailer to sway, wobble and get out of control.
Proper weight of the BOAT TRAILER TONGUE
Too little weight on the tongue can cause it to sway back and forth and become entangled, making it really difficult to keep things under control behind the wheel. This will also cause premature wear on your rear wheels.
On the other hand, if you are putting too much weight on the tongue, you could overload the rear wheels, making steering a difficult task. This will also cause premature wear on the front wheels.
The weight of your tongue should be between 8 and 15 percent of the total weight of your loaded trailer, also known as the gross trailer weight (GTW).
Professional Tip:
You can tell if your BOAT TRAILER TONGUE is out of weight by looking at your trailer: Notice if your trailer is tilted forward or backward. If so, the weight of your tongue may be uneven. Also keep in mind that trailers should be leveled to the ground.
